International Personal Finance: “Working together with GTS was done with great efficiency and reliability, while gaining improvements in price and performance.”

INTERNATIONAL PERSONAL FINANCE (IPF), operating under the business name Provident, is a leading international provider of consumer credit – and the human face of finance with a business model that has been operating for more than 130 years. Their consumer credit product has two core elements: a smallsum, short-term unsecured cash loan and an optional home collection service provided by dedicated agents operating in emerging markets where demand for credit is growing and markets are relatively underserved. The company has 2,4 million customers, 6,3 thousand employees and more than 28,4 thousand agents and operates in six countries – Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Mexico and Romania with a central office in Leeds, UK.

IPF was operating as a collection of separate, independent companies in its respective geographical markets. They recently decided to consolidate their wide area networks as a fundamental part of their strategic planning for the future. IPF needed a reliable partner to deliver quality connectivity between their main offices and branches in Central Europe (Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania) and their main data centers based in the United Kingdom. The service needed to be provided within the framework of an international agreement but preserving daily local contacts with field operations and customer service within each country in Central Europe.
IPF required local contacts from GTS who could speak the local language and deliver a personal, productive experience. GTS provided seamless services throughout the five countries facilitating direct contact between the local IPF operation and the local GTS customer service and network operation center in each country. The process of converting a number of legacy connectivity solutions to a consolidated, modern virtual private network needed to be carried out without impacting daily IPF operations. GTS created added value for the customer by helping to build a simple and easy-to-manage system based on homogenous solution in multiple countries. Additional benefit for the customer was lower overall costs comparing to previous network configuration.

“We have created a robust network technology platform that supports the IPF network consolidation strategy. Working together with GTS will make it happen with greater efficiency and reliability, while gaining improvements in price and performance,” says Andrew Herd – Head of IPF IT Commercial and Service.

GTS and IPF engineers worked together to design a virtual private network linking IPF branches with IPF main country offices, connecting IPF country offices to each other and then finally connecting this network to the two main data center locations sited in London and Manchester. The network features various redundancy mechanisms to protect traffic in the event that any network infrastructure problem should occur. The solution also satisfied specific requirements regarding network separation and security in order to provide the necessary privacy for IPF financial transactions. GTS took special precautions during set up and migration of traffic from the legacy system to the new solution to make sure the procedures did not affect IPF mission critical applications.
The network connects 27 locations in Czech Republic, 13 locations in Slovakia, 17 locations in Romania, 24 locations in Hungary, 81 locations in Poland and two locations in the United Kingdom. The backbone network uses fiberoptic cable for access at some locations and radio and DSL copper as well at many locations to provide for full connectivity. The service is fully monitored by NOCs (Network Operation Centers) at GTS and includes access to an on-line portal through which IPF can verify the performance of its virtual private network in real time. There is a dedicated team of service managers at IPF headquarters as well as in every country operation to fully support this important service that is crucial to the company’s daily operations.
